Heathrow: Careers and Economy
This versatile resource has recently been updated following feedback from schools and colleges in the Heathrow area. Whilst this pack has been developed for schools and colleges in the five boroughs around Heathrow, it has proved popular with students and teachers from across the country.
‘Heathrow: Careers and Economy’ is designed to:
- Raise awareness of the full range of airport career opportunities.
- Highlight the qualities and skills that Heathrow employers are looking for in new recruits.
- Show how key concepts and ideas relating to careers, the economy, the environment and citizenship can be acquired in a work-related context and applied across the curriculum and in young people’s personal and working lives. It will also be useful to students and teachers who want to find out more about the wide range of jobs available at airports.
The materials are particularly valued by teachers of careers, work-related learning, citizenship and subject teachers (e.g. geography, business, travel and tourism and ICT) who wish to use aviation and airport business activity as a resource for learning.
2008 additions and updates
At the request of teachers, the following additions and updates have recently been made:
- Information for Teachers – 2008 edition. This includes revised economic and labour market information.
- An additional activity on language learning and cultural understanding.
- Differentiated versions of four activities (on Heathrow employment, understanding job adverts, the passenger experience and customer care) for students with learning difficulties.
- In order to underpin and accredit the class room resources, BAA has worked with ASDAN to map the activities into the CoPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) curriculum at Levels 1 and 2. See Section 3, ‘Using this pack’ for further information and guidance.
Heathrow: Careers and Economy has three sections:
- Information for teachers (2008 edition)
Describes Heathrow’s workforce and its impact on the local economy and labour market. Information is provided on the main airport employment sectors with links to airport companies and information on career opportunities. Also included in this section is a directory of colleges, training providers and universities that offer airport relevant vocational courses and work-based learning within travelling distance of Heathrow. - Classroom resources
Based on the Heathrow world of work, these materials are designed for teachers to use with students across a range of curriculum subjects, vocational learning and personal development contexts.
