Customer Service day - (max 24 students)

Through a series of interactive sessions, students learn the importance of good customer service.

The day compliments unit 2 of the ICT GCSE - ICT in an organisation and provides students with an opportunity to gain experience of direct working practices within a business. They are given the opportunity to understand current technology which is used in businesses to deliver REAL time information.

Retail Academy

The Academy was established by BAA and its retail partners in June 2004 to enhance staff recruitment and development. The Academy runs a Retail Apprenticeship which was launched in April 2005. Apprenticeships offer staff under the age of 25 the great opportunity to learn and develop at both level 2 and level 3, accredited by City and Guilds.

Our retail partners employ around 5,000 staff (set to increase dramatically with the opening of T5) and are always on the lookout for committed and enthusiastic people who can deliver great customer service. By centralising recruitment we have increased productivity and have already placed over 800 people into work at the airport.

The Retail Academy also runs "Retail and customer service days", for a maximum of 15 students supporting unit 3 of Business Studies and Leisure & Tourism GCSEs/GNVQs. The days raise awareness of retail job opportunities as well as looking at customer service aspects, ie delivery, standards and complaints.

The Skills Centre, Feltham

Opened by Gordon Brown MP in 2003 and operated by West Thames College, the Skills Centre provides training for local 14 to 16 year olds in construction and other vocational areas, as well as a range of programmes for those aged over 16. BAA and the BAA Communities have provided financial support towards the Centre's establishment and running costs. BAA has also worked with the Centre to set up a steering group, comprising T5 construction suppliers and other local companies, that helps the College ensure that the curriculum is relevant to the construction industry.

The Spelthorne Mobile Construction Classroom

The mobile classroom visits schools throughout Spelthorne to give 14 to 16 year old pupils the chance to learn construction skills whist still at school. Operated by Look 2 Training, and established by Surrey EBP, the Spelthorne Learning Partnership and BAA, the classroom has been operating since 2003 and has encouraged many young people to enter the construction industry.

The Slough Construction Training Centre

The Centre, which provides construction training for 14 to 16 year olds in Slough, was established by Windsor and Slough EBP with support from BAA and Transco. It helps young people to gain an insight into the construction industry by developing practical skills in key areas.

T5 Teacher Resource Pack

Launched by BAA, local education business partnerships and the Learning and Skills Development Agency in 2005, the Resource Pack provides local schools with a range of curriculum materials and a DVD linked to the development and operation of Terminal 5. The pack links in particular to the Work-Related Learning, Enterprise and Applied Business curricula. For further information, please contact joe_hardman@baa.com

Centre of Vocational Excellence

The success of BAA's retail and engineering apprenticeship programmes has helped the company to secure status as a Centre of Vocational Excellence, or CoVE, from the Learning and Skills Council. As part of the CoVE, BAA and the education business partnerships of Ealing, Hillingdon and Hounslow are appointing an education manager to develop links between airport companies and local secondary schools.
