Vocational Skills: Gatwick Airport
Welcome Hosts
Each year we recruit Welcome Hosts from schools and colleges local to Gatwick as part of a unique work experience programme. The students, mostly in further education, meet and greet travellers, answer queries and offer security advice. For further information, please contact: welcomehosts@blackjack.co.uk
Construction Classroom
Following the success of the Spelthorne mobile construction classroom, established by Surrey Education Business Partnership (EBP) with support from BAA Heathrow, a similar unit was established close to Gatwick . This mobile learning unit visits schools in the boroughs of Reigate & Banstead and Tandridge, introducing 14-16 year old students to the world of building and construction. Experienced trainers give practical classes in brickwork, health and safety, electrical and other skills, to encourage young people to consider a career in the construction industry.
Gatwick Environment Centre
The Environment Centre is located in 68 hectares of airport-owned land set aside to encourage biodiversity. Opened in autumn 2005, the Centre offers schools and community groups the chance to experience a range of ecological activities in a woodland environment, while supporting the National Curriculum.
VIEW - the virtual interactive employer's workplace
Launched in 2004, the Gatwick VIEW is a CD-rom designed to provide young people studying Leisure & Tourism vocational GCSEs with a unique insight into the working life of an airport. A range of companies and job opportunities at Gatwick are demonstrated on the CD-rom. VIEW can help schools in the delivery of their work related learning curriculum, PHSE and careers information.
For a copy of the CD-rom, please contact www.futurevu.com
Language Days
A selection of language days, held throughout East and West Sussex, are supported by BAA Gatwick through sponsorship and involvement of our Information Assistants who help run activity workshops for the students.
