Vocational Skills: Stansted Airport

Since 1998, BAA Stansted has been involved in a number of cross-sector partnership training and employment projects. Building on the success of these projects, BAA Stansted has created an airport skills training programme, accredited by the National Council for Further Education, which provides participants with employability skills linked to job skills profiles within the airport.

Airport Skills Training Programme

Airport Skills is a week long course incorporating staff benefits, staff rostas, safety and security training, fire and evacuation training and an airport tour. Participants learn about the airport environment, receive help with completing a five year history, CTC (Counter Terrorist check), criminal records check and the security implications of obtaining an airport ID pass. Also included is confidence building, social skills and interview techniques.

Role Play Days

Role play days are run in partnership with BAA Stansted, airport employers and the Essex EBP (education business partnership). They are designed to show how a number of service industries work together, and to give an insight into the employment opportunities of different career sectors in aviation.

Year 10 students from six different schools work as part of a team supported by an undergraduate mentor. They take on roles from one of the six career sectors and respond to a chosen scenario.

The aims of the day are to look at employment opportunities within the local area, understand the importance of education, qualifications and training, find out about job roles and responsibilities and develop skills in team work, problem solving, time management, co-operation and communications.

Professional Interview Days

The aim of the day is for year 11 students to have a one-to-one interview with an employer and gain valuable constructive feedback to prepare them for college/workplace interviews. The school gives the student at least ten vacancies to choose from, and each employer is given a brief on each vacancy and requirements. Each interview lasts approximately twenty minutes and then a short feedback session is given to the student.

BOSS Days (business opportunities skills seminar)

The BOSS Day is an event aimed to raise the expectations and motivation to all beneficiaries in year 10. It focuses on drawing out the skills and qualities of the students and to assist them in preparing their own CVs for work experience and other documents to take ownership of their post-16 career/education decision.

The day is interspersed with an Actorshop drama group showing both "good and bad practices". The students have opportunities to practice communication skills and increase confidence, in front of their fellow students.

Employers help the students to challenge a range of stereotypes associated with employment and raise expectations.

Industry Days

Industry days are run for year 10&11 students, providing them with an insight into the airport industry and the different opportunities available. Presentations are given and a number of props are available for the students to have hands-on experience, including hand-held metal detectors and aircraft marshalling wands.

Students choose an career sector which interests them, and they then are taken through the skills and qualifications required for the various positions. The day finishes with an interview.
